Hardwood Floor Maintenance

Proper care and maintenance is the key to keeping your hardwood flooring beautiful, and is necessary for all hardwood flooring whether it was prefinished at the factory or finished at the installation site. No-maintenance hardwood flooring does not exist. Exact recommended care varies depending upon the type of finish or wax used.

Preventive Maintenance is the most important factor for long-term performance and beauty
of your hardwood flooring:

  • Use protective mats or rugs at the exterior doors to help prevent sand and grit from walking onto the floor. Gritty sand is your floor’s worst enemy.
  • Install proper floor protectors (felt pads) on furniture used on your hardwood floors. Protectors allow chairs to move easily over the floor without scuffing. Clean the protectors regularly to remove any grit that becomes imbedded in the protector.
  • Vacuum regularly. Use a brush attachment to vacuum your hardwood floors when vacuuming your household carpets. Sweep your hardwood floor between vacuumings as necessary.
  • Never wet mop a hardwood floor. Instead, use a well-wrung out cloth or a Wood Floor Cleaning Kit. Excessive water causes the wood to expand, possibly damaging the flooring.Clean food and liquid spills immediately to prevent possible damage.
  • Keep high heel shoes in good repair. Heels without their protective cap will expose the fastening nail and exert over 8,000 pounds per square inch of pressure on your floor! That’s high enough to damage hardened concrete.
  • Never use any cleaning products containing wax or silicone, like Murphy’s oil soap, Endust, Mop and Glow, etc. They can dull the finish and prevent future applications of polyurethane finish from adhering.
